Essentials items for a good backpacking trip!
What should you take when going backpacking? What a good question…here it is the answer.
When you are putting together your personal packing list for a backpacking trip, experience is your best guide to go by. Backpacking is probably the only activity where the efficient packer is rewarded with a light pack and the overpacker gets punished. Below is just a guide/outline for items that you should consider taking on a backpacking trip.
The Basics
- Backpack
- Sleeping Bag
- Tent
- Sleeping Pad
- Food

- Spider trailer
- Water bottles – at least two 1-litter bottles
- Stove and fuel
- Cook kit
- Matches/lighter
- Insulated mug
- Lightweight bowl and spoon
- Utility knife
Clothing
- Camp shoes – sandals, tennis shoes, Chacos, etc
- Boots – waterproof and broken in
- Socks – wool or synthetic, no cotton
- 1 long underwear bottoms, synthetic
- 1 long underwear top, synthetic
- 1 pair shorts

- Rain jacket and pants
- Fleece sweater or jacket

Check the weather for the time you’ll be on your trip, check the location and elevation of the trail. Other questions to investigate when deciding what to pack include: is the trail well marked, will I need a compass, how strenuous is the hike and what kind of food will I need?

Maybe a bit off topic but ever tried to do something like snowboarding with cheap gear?

Although you have lip balm and first aid kit listed I think something else to consider is sunscreen and natural insect repellant depending on the area you’re in. Always two staples on camping, backpacking, and hiking trips that come in handy.
