Backpacking Stove Operation and Safety Tips
Here are some stove operation and safety tips that you should try and follow when operating a backpacking stove or any sort of camping stove in general.
- Don’t cook inside tents or enclosed spaces.
- Check all fuel lines, valves, and connections for leaks before lighting your stove.
- If you don’t have a stove that runs on car fuel, don’t use oxygenated gas. It breaks down vital stove components.
- Always make certain your stove is firmly situated on a stable and level surface.
- Don’t fill a stove’s fuel tank to the brim. Fuel expands as it warms, so leaving an air space prevents excessive pressure buildup.
- Empty the fuel tank before storing your stove for several months or more.
- In extreme cold, don’t spill fuel on bare skin – this can cause frostbite.
- Use a stove base on snow or soft surfaces.
Obviously experience and education is the best tool for safe operation of a backpacking stove.
