Is your sleeping bag dirty or starting to smell? Here are a few tips for cleaning/washing your sleeping bag. Never dry clean your sleeping bag, down or synthetic. Hand washing is the recommended method though machine washing works well (in a front loader only). As for soaps, any liquid detergent will do. Powdered detergents are okay if you can get them to dissolve thoroughly.

Here are a couple rules:

• Use warm or cold water only; excess heat will destroy any sleeping bag.
• Use half as much liquid detergent as you think you need.
• Remove the spun-dry bag from the washer and place it in an extractor (a high speed centrifuge, available at coin operated laundries). One pass through the extractor will remove nearly all the water.
• Dry the bag at a low heat setting in a large commercial dryer. Be sure the dryer actually puts out low heat. If it doesn’t, jam a magazine over the safety button so you can run the dryer with the door ajar.

Rafting the Upper Gauley River is an intense ride and an awesome time! The first weekend of October brought about an opportunity for me to get a chance to run this section of river. It was my first time rafting the Upper section, although I have rafted the Lower Gauley as well as the Upper and Lower sections of New River in West Virginia (on top of some other different sections of rivers). West Virginia rafting is world class!

Luckily, I was going with an experienced group of friends, all who have rafted before as well as some who had rafting the upper section before. This made for a good time because our guide, who was great and willing to have fun with group, was willing to take either more adventurous or more fun lines through rapids hitting different holes, waves, and rocks that all the other boats were avoiding.

Everyone was worried that it was going to be a cold day on the river, but the skys stayed clear and the weather warmed up for us. The forecast was for mid 60’s but it peaked at around 70 during the day. Plus the water temperature wasn’t too bad so getting splashed or taking a swim was not uncomfortable.

With 7 class five rapids, the trip is well worth it. Spots such as Pillow Rock and Sweet’s Fall draw a lot of attention from locals, hikers, tourists, and other boaters that are on or around the river. These are two hot spots for groups of people to stop and take out of the water to watch some of the other paddlers and commercial trips hit the rapids.

If you EVER have the chance to go rafting on the Upper Gauley (and have rafting experience) then DO IT! Do not hesitate. It may seem a little scary or intimidating, but some of class V rapids are safer than some of the lower class rapids. The thrill will be worth it!

A couple weeks ago I wrote about my reflections on Gauley Fest. One of the points that I made was that I got asked a lot of questions about gear that people were looking for, one of those products was hammocks. Well, the good folks at Eagle Nest Outfitters got wind of the post through a Google Alert and reached out to me.

After emailing back and forth with one of their people, I got a dealer account established with the company and placed my first order. With the products set to arrive tomorrow, I am excited to start offering their products through the new TheGearHouse store that should be launching next week. In my first order, I have mostly hammocks and straps coming but I also have one of the DryFly Tarps.The hammocks and other gear are great for backpacking, camping, or just taking on a day trip to relax with! Although I have not used the tent in any extreme weather conditions, it is rated at three seasons and I have not had any issues in March, May, or October with it. It did get a little warm inside during my trip in May with the rain fly on and it rained overnight so it is a good thing I left the fly on!

I am 6 feet tall and the tent sometimes seems just a little too short for me. I like to be able to stretch all the way out when sleeping and depending on how much gear you have inside the tent at the top where you head is, you feet can get jammed into the bottom. I also like to try to keep my sleeping bag from being pushed up against the tent wall so that it stays away from the dew or rain, so this usually does not happen with the Kelty Crestone 1 Miserables, Les buy .
