Backcountry Video Gear & Tips

When going into the backcountry on a trip or even just for a day hike, everyone loves to take pictures, especially internet-types like myself. Documenting the trip as best as possible and the great sights is half the fun of going!

However, with so many start up video bloggers out there, now many more people are into doing video gear reviews, video trip diaries, and just about anything else they could do with video. So while your own on your next trip and wanting to make a video, test a new piece of gear in a video review, or just want to capture the good times you are having with friends, here are some different items to make that happen better!

The Video Camera

Obviously the most important part of capturing videos is the video camera. Here you have so many options – everything from a normal bigger and bulkier tape camcorders to your DVD camcorders, hard disk cameras, and USB video cameras. Most of the time when going backpacking and hiking, you are worried about the weight of your gear, so I wouldn’t recommend anything too big here. If you have some money to spend on your camera, then something like a Canon Vixia would probably be a great choice with its 12x zoom and large display screen. But, for the more practical hikers out there, the Flip Video Ultra camera Masters of the Universe ipod is the perfect spot to start. It’s a simple USB camera that plugs right into your computer to allow you to manage your videos, hold up to 120 minutes of action, and weighs just 13 ounces. If you’ve watched any of the videos here at TheGearHouse Great Expectations buy , I’ve shot all of them with a Flip camera and it works great.

Get The Camera Stick

If you’re familiar with taking pictures of yourself or a group of you and your friends, you know that besides setting the self timer, the only way to get a picture, is to stretch your arm out and try to take a picture of yourself. Now, there is this great thing called “XShot” or as people have started calling it “the camera stick“. It screws into the hole on the bottom of your camera (digital camera or video camera) and allows you to extend the arm out 37″ to take video or pictures. It’s great for hiking, traveling, parties, rock climbing, camping, and anything else you need to take pictures or videos at!

Monopods

Something like the Canon Monopod would allow you to have a steady and adjustable surface to attach your camera to and be able to help you take better videos and pictures. There are even some camera monopods that double as hiking poles, so look out for those ones and you can double up on a piece of gear to use!

No matter what kind of video camera (or regular camera for that matter) that you decide to purchase, be sure to get some kind of waterproof, water tight, bomb proof, crush proof case that will keep your valuable investment safe and free from danger. The Flip video camera has a specific “underwater” case that you can purchase that will work with it – Flip Video Underwater Case. Or just a basic Pelican Case would work so that you can protect your gear – Pelican Case

Tri Pods are Helpful

If you are going to be out alone and taking pictures or video of yourself while performing a task, say testing a piece of gear or setting up a tent, a Tri Pod is a great item to pick up. Just a cheap Tri Pod from Wal-Mart or other big box store will do the trick. Get something with adjustable legs so that you can make it steady on the terrain that you are going to be filming from. The Tri Pod I use for my video and pictures is one that I picked up at a Big Lots a few years back for $10 and it’s still working great.

With this gear, you should be ready to start producing some quality backcountry videos. The final steps include downloading to your computer, editing them, and then uploading them to sites like YouTube. Maybe we’ll have some future posts about that process! For now, enjoy taking videos and get out there!
