Testing Different Fire Starting Materials

I recently tested out a few different fire starting materials using my Light My Fire FireSteel Scout. I tested unravelled twine, cotton balls, and cotton balls with petroleum jelly. All three worked great to light some small kindling with just a couple strikes of the firesteel. However, if you’re looking to make a survival or fire starting kit of sorts, I’d definitely go with the cotton ball with a clump of Vaseline or petroleum jelly in it. This will help it light quicker, burn longer, and be reusable if needed.
